Mother Nature is making it difficult for blooming trees, bushes and bulbs. It is going to freeze tonight so if there is anything in bloom that you can cover, do it. I know you can't throw a sheet over a magnolia tree but if you have daffodils in bloom cover them or cut them and bring them in. If you use plastic as a cover make sure that it is not touching the plants. I am sure this will not be the last time we see this kind of weather. March is notorious for warm/cold days. If you are not already a subscriber to our newsletter now is a good time to sign up to receive our timely frost alerts. It looks as if tonight will be spent inside huddled underneath a warm, soft, blanket.

Here west of Topeka, we had a little ice, a little snow. The only blooms we covered were daffodils and crocus that had just opened. Today (Sunday) it melted but there is a chance of snow in two days. Should we uncover the plants in between, or doesn't it matter? How long can the plants stay under plastic sheeting?

The leaves should be fine. You might lose some new growth but it will likely come back.

@Natalie
If they're in bloom or about to bloom I'd either cover them up or cut them and put them in a vase indoors where you can continue to enjoy them.

What about the plants that are starting to leaf out? My honeysuckles have a ton of new leaves and my knockout roses are starting to show some signs of life. Will they be ok?
I am so new to this crazy midwest weather. Back E. where I am from spring is in full swing.

Should I cut all the daff blooms I have or only if the are almost open?
