I planted new beds last fall including 3 nandina bushes. I have another one that is about 4-5 years old, so I'm familiar with the growth habit. The 3 new plants have no leaves, while the older plant has remaining reddish leaves around the topmost portion and no leaves around the bottom. I was wondering if anyone knew how long I should wait for new growth before deciding they were dead?? I have bent the remaining portions of the trunk(s) and they don't snap off, but I just feel I should be seeing some green leaves appearing. Since the older one never completely loses all of its leaves, I just wasn't sure on these new one. Okay, I'm rambling, if anyone has info. please help!

Have you seen anything yet? No leaves does not sound good. Scrape one of the branches to see if there is any green. If so, keep waiting. I know these don't like to get too wet. It could be a root problem.

Shellee, I just purchased my first nandina so I don't have any experience with which to answer your question. But I'll say this - the ones at the nursery were very sparsely leafed out. Mine has a mix of red (last years?) and greenish so perhaps this plant is slow to put out new growth. Or perhaps the cool weather has it lagging a bit, just like so many of our other plants this year. I've also heard that nandina can die back down to the ground in our zone 5, so my guess is that if yours has branches and leaves, it's just taking it's time in committing to new growth.
