Shellee Brouhard Ugly junipers

I have a cluster of 3 old junipers that have become overgrown, ugly, and have started to die off. I would like to help speed up the process so we can dig them up and plant something else. Any suggestions? Continue

David Nelson Cover crop for raised beds

We are trying to decide what type of cover crop we should use to cover our raised beds, used for our tomato garden We want to replant tomatoes in the same soil next year. But I am not sure if we can do that without rotation or a cover crop. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts. Continue

Kathryn Major Vermicomposting/worm farm

I just started a small worm farm this weekend in my heated garage in an old multi-tier litter box, and I'm wondering if anyone else is vermicomposting and has any pointers. I bought some red wigglers at a local bait shop so I could have them immediately and skip the shipping. I've wanted to do this for a long time and the mood just seized me as I was digging up my calla bulbs for winter storage. I've looked at lots of websites, but since I'm starting small, I'm curious whether anyone else has do… Continue

Shelly Marsh Time to cover up

Winter like weather has arrived. Pull out your gardening sheets and blankets because if there are any annuals you are trying to keep around they will need to be covered this weekend. The low temperatures are suppose to dive into the 30's for the next couple of mornings and it looks as if they may be forecasting a chance of snow flurries on Saturday. Yikes! I don't even like to talk about snow this early. It makes for a very long winter. Make sure you have signed up to receive our weekly e-newsl… Continue

Shelly Marsh Cicada eating Beagle

Are the cicada's in your neighborhood getting any quieter? They are in ours do to the appetite of our Beagle, Sam Parker. He is crazy about eating cicadas. I know it sounds crazy but he will come into my office and give me that look, "Hey, I know you are busy and it is really not time for my walk but do you think we could go outside and look for some cicadas?" Seriously we may have to take Sam to cicadas anonymous....Pretty funny! He is especially fond of the ones right out of their shell. Eww..… Continue

Shelly Marsh Naked ladies

Naked ladies are in full bloom all over Kansas City. I am not a huge fan. No offense, just not one of my favorite flowers. They seem a bit naked to me.....Ha! That bare stem just doesn't cut it. Anyway, they are every where so if you have never seen one they are pink and about 2 feet tall with a naked stem. You can't miss them! Continue

Shelly Marsh Bees are a buzzin

While I was working outside this morning I was amazed at the number of bumble bees buzzing around my begonias. There were so many in fact that I stopped working just to watch them gather nectar for a bit. So fascinating! I was stung a couple of weeks ago but only because I swatted a poor bee against my neck. I could feel something buzzing around and sure enough the bee got a bit too close and whamo! I had to have Kevin pull the stinger out of my neck. I put some ice on my neck and felt better in… Continue

Shelly Marsh On the blog again....

We just returned from vacation and I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with laundry, mail etc... It was great to sleep in my own bed last night. It was even greater to be at home in my own bed and awakend by a loud thunderstorm this morning! It was as if Mother Nature was personally welcoming me home. While we were away, we kindly asked a young boy down the street from us to care for our potted plants. Everything seems to be in good shape so it appears that he did a great job. I would check in on the… Continue

Karen Schell Tomatoes

I just started vege gardening this year. I tried square foot gardening. My tomatoes, along with cucumbers and peppers are wonderful. I do have one problem though. As soon as a tomato gets ripe I go to pick it and the back side has been completely eaten away by little gnat looking bugs. Help! Can I spray them with soapy water or something? The tomatoes look so beautiful on the front side I would realy like my husband and I to enjoy them! Thanks! Continue

Joanne Cawby Naked boys

You call them naked boys, I call them naked ladies. Some call them surprise lilies. If we are talking about the same thing, they are actually an amaryllis. My sister-in-law in South Carolina grows amaryllis as a perennial, because it is mild there. Joanne Cawby Continue

Dolores Warren Roof Top Gardens

A few years ago my friend and I went on a bus tour to Wisconsin. On the way home the tour stopped at a restaurant that had a grass roof! That wasn't all.................they had goats on the roof eating the grass. This is no joke; I have pictures!! I can't remember the name of the restaurant, or what we ate, but I remember the grass and the goats! Continue

Nancy Donahue Butterfly Bush

My son got me a Butterfly bush last year for Mother's Day and when it bloomed it had little blue flowers on it that looked just like a butterfly. Well when spring came it was dead and I have somehow lost the little card that came with it with the name of the bush. I would like to replace it but I have looked all over at the stores, garden stores and on the computer but I can't find this bush or a name for it. All I find are the ones with the cone flowers.Does anyone know the name of this Buttefl… Continue

A.Valentine Where are the bees?

Last year by this time we had a ton of bees buzzing around our garden. I have seen very few this year and it worries me. My cucumbers, squashes, etc. are not being pollinated and falling off. It looks like I will have to hand pollinate in the mornings :( Anyone else having this problem? Continue

Shelly Marsh Summer Solstice

Not only is tomorrow Father's Day it is also the first day of summer! I must say this last week has certainly felt like summer. Temperatures in the 90's with the heat index near 100. Next week's forecast doesn't get any better. Hot and humid with temperatures in the mid to upper 90's. When you are outside gardening make sure you are clothed properly, have applied sunscreen and have something to drink to keep you hydrated. When the temperatures and the heat index hit the 100's it can be dangerous… Continue
