elemental sulfur is best to change the pH. Organic matter is also important. There are fertilizers that are more acid based that would work well for this. Im not sure if I would fertilize it right away. They tend to look scraggly until after they…

I realize Im a little late most of the time this isnt a problem. it just means things are a little too moist on the surface. in some cases it could be another problem but if you arent seeing seedlings literally keeling over it probably isnt that…

It's not a Green Zebra. It's probablyT igerella based on the size. Tigerella was at one time called Mr Stripey. However what people calle Mr Stripey now is a large 1lb + tomato found by Wayne Hilton, the former owner of Totally Tomato,…

My start to the year

Posted on March 18, 2009 at 1:22pm 2 Comments

I started this year with a broken wrist. It is not healing as it should and I haven't been able to get much work done. I work as a horticulturist and do lots of gardening and landscaping but this has been quite a set back.

Ouch!

I have started my tomato seeds. It took awhile to sow those seeds with this wrist (I am very methodical and careful in my work). I sowed about 35 various lines and 40 new hybrids (provided they all come… Continue

Regarding growing lettuce under lights....I was hoping to get by (only) using some fish emulsion at most but i have never grown lettuce under lights, only tomato and peppers (from seed), just long enough before putting them outside. Im not crazy about fertilizer on lettuce anyway since it would seem to have a direct shot to the leaf, at least on tomatoes it has a vine to filter through first.( I only use fish emulsion and a little epsom salts) I dont know if that thought even remotely makes sense but......... seems logical enough.
Do you know the light requirements for lettuce once the seeds germinate?

That sounds great! It's pretty gnarly right now, and I was worried I'd let it go too long. I would greatly appreciate any advice/consulting. I'll take a picture of it soon and send it your way, so you can have a look at it.
