I love garden art and crafts. Have any of you been over to my friend Steve Hess's house. He has wonderful gardens, but oh the things to put in them are amazing. Visit this link. I know that they are hosting a holiday open house. He has a blog too!...

Hello- Our cocker spaniel loved this time of year. She devoured Cicadas and I swear we could hear them in her belly. The only real drawback was that she did NOT want to eat her normal food and her intestinal track was not too pleased. This was qu...

If there's any chance you're out in the Stilwell area on Thursday, we will be at Will Wyatt's Cowboy Couture sampling all the jellies and mustards. They're on Old Metcalf south of 151st Street. Would love to see you! Suzanne

Hey, Shelly: I've been reading SavvyGardener for quite awhile. It's comforting to know that others go through similar garden situations, whether it's our wacky weather, pests or just general hort info. Hope you can make it out to Stilwell to our garden store before the first frost. We've still got lots of flowers, herbs, etc.
I'll be at Powell Gardens on Sept. 12th for the Chile pepper fest.

Would recommend a new category for the forum ... "Pests and Diseases" or something similar.

Hi Shelly
Thank you for getting back to me. I went to the greenhouse site and found it very interesting. For instance I need to get a fan that clips on something in the greenhouse to keep the air circulating. I am thinking there is many things for me to consider. I will check the library to see if there is some books that can help me with the conditions of the greenhouse and some problems that might happen if you are not careful.
If in the mean time you come accross some more information that might be useful. How do I put stuff so that other people can see and maybe help?
Thanks again for your help,
Lynda J.
PS. If I can help people with some gardening problems I will try.

Hi Shelly. Thanks! (FYI, saw your website in the Lawrence paper). Nail guns.....yes, absolutely awesome!! I am addicted to making them and now am searching out friends with downed branches ;-) Hope you figure it out! My husband was skeptical about showing me how to use the gun, but after I finished them he was pretty impressed, especially for free!!

I am sure you have certain places you frequent. My favorite, though can be pricey, is Planters down in the River Market. Betts always went there and drug Todd along! Evverytime he takes me there, it is a walk down memory lane for him. They also have great spices!

Time to cover up

Winter like weather has arrived. Pull out your gardening sheets and blankets because if there are any annuals you are trying to keep around they will need to be covered this weekend. The low temperatures are suppose to dive into the 30's for the next couple of mornings and it looks as if they may be forecasting a chance of snow flurries on Saturday. Yikes! I don't even like to talk about snow this early. It makes for a very long winter.

Cicada eating Beagle

Are the cicada's in your neighborhood getting any quieter? They are in ours do to the appetite of our Beagle, Sam Parker. He is crazy about eating cicadas. I know it sounds crazy but he will come into my office and give me that look, "Hey, I know you are busy and it is really not time for my walk but do you think we could go outside and look for some cicadas?" Seriously we may have to take Sam to cicadas anonymous....Pretty funny! He is especially fond of the ones right out of their shell. Eww..… Continue

Wet Soggy Week

I think I have started to grow webbed feet! Boy is it wet. The grass is growing like crazy and I haven't had time to cut it. It looks like this weekend will be the time to be outside. Nice mild temperatures and no rain. I can hardly wait!

Naked ladies

Naked ladies are in full bloom all over Kansas City. I am not a huge fan. No offense, just not one of my favorite flowers. They seem a bit naked to me.....Ha! That bare stem just doesn't cut it. Anyway, they are every where so if you have never seen one they are pink and about 2 feet tall with a naked stem. You can't miss them!

Bees are a buzzin

While I was working outside this morning I was amazed at the number of bumble bees buzzing around my begonias. There were so many in fact that I stopped working just to watch them gather nectar for a bit. So fascinating! I was stung a couple of weeks ago but only because I swatted a poor bee against my neck. I could feel something buzzing around and sure enough the bee got a bit too close and whamo! I had to have Kevin pull the stinger out of my neck. I put some ice on my neck and felt better in… Continue
