Gorgeous today. 71, not too much wind. Outstanding for February in Kansas! We appreciated it. Reminds us that gardening is just around the corner.

Are these crabapples? We have lots on our tree. Birds don't eat them. I tasted one and now I know why!

We ordered some seeds but not enough so will order again; should have planned better to avoid shipping. Garden will be huge this year. What are you planning to plant?

We measured it the other day and it's 68' by 210'. We plan mostly vegies. We can, freeze, and eat from it, plus give food to family if they pick it themselves! There's just the two of us working it, for the most part, but we have…

Wow, thats pretty big.  What were you planning when you tilled it up?  You planning to sell extra produce or is this meant to be for your extended family?  You planning on doing any canning or eating as you harvest it? How many people…

Large Vegie Garden Plan

We have tilled a huge area for our garden next year. It will be at least 100' by 150'. Planting ideas would be great. Most garden planning ideas are for small gardens. I need ideas for a big one! Thanks.See More

Looking forward to cooler days. Planted a fall garden recentrly; nothing germinating yet, so that's frustrating. I'm new to this, so any ideas would be appreciated. Some of my annuals look pretty sad, too.

Nancy Clark replied to Cindy Vinchattle's discussion 'Growing Green Peppers'
I'm not having much luck with peppers this year either. I've read, though, that too much nitrogen will make lots of green growth with few peppers; they supposedly don't need much fertilizer, so maybe you fertilized too much? Just a…

Nutritional value of vegetables

I read a recent study about the nutritional value of vegetables today versus those of fifty plus years ago. It showed that our fast hybrids don't have near the value of the older plants because they grow too quickly to absorb nutrients from the soil. Another reason to grow your own "slow" food, and perhaps grow more heirloom varieties rather than hybrids.

You might check out applying neem. I'm not sure but don't think that soap/water will work for these nasty beetles unless you can shake them all out of your trees into the soap mixture.

My book says that if leaves are skeletonized, it's Mexican bean beetles. If holes are large, it's more likely bean leaf beetles. Both can be eliminated with pyrethrin. Neem is an option for bean leaf beetles. Mexican bean beetles are tough…

Nancy Clark replied to Cindy Vinchattle's discussion 'Growing Green Peppers'
I've read that peppers don't do well in extreme heat and prefer a bit of shade at times. Mine are in full sun but seem to wilt quickly in this KS heat and sun. They are still growing but not as productive as I had hoped. Maybe I'm…

Your method worked well. I have about 4 that are growing great. They are climbing up our deck and will hopefully give us some much-needed shade before long. Can't wait for them to bloom either!

How did they do? Like usual, many of mine did not grow, which is normal. The ones that did are doing great. Hope yours are doing well.

The same thing happened to us! Amazing. My gardening book says to harvest when they are the size of marbles and to strip leaves above them as you pick, causing the plant to send out more branches and produce more stalks. It's my first time with…

Free Composted Cow Manure

Posted on March 31, 2010 at 11:07am 0 Comments

For those of you who are interested, K-State's Dairy Farm in Manhattan will give you (yes, it's free) composted manure. Monday through Thursday, just go by and get what you want--bring your own shovel and bags. If you want a lot, such a trailer-load full, they will load it for you on Friday afternoons only. No appointment necessary--the cows are always giving!

My daughter works at the K-State dairy. They have compost available for free if you are willing to go get it. They will even load it up for you!
