I also do not understand this.  So, did a quick google search for "benefits of organic seed" and one of the sites that came up was http://www.highmowingseeds.com/why-buy-organic-seeds.html   Havent read it all yet, but this may…

Nutgrass in lawn

For some reason, our lawn has grown an over abundance of nutgrass. I know it's hard to get rid of and forgot when it the best time to treat it. Is now the best time or in the fall? Any product recommendations? I'd like to do some overseeding this fall too to quash out the stuff...

I sat on the cold, cold ground on Tuesday and planted 80 daffodil and tulip bulbs.  The soil was still very workable, so we'll see what happens come spring.

I've had luck planting some forgotten daffodil bulbs in January-February when a little Midwestern warm spell thawed the ground enough to get a spade in.  They were a bit late and small the first year, but they took right off after that -…

Too late to put these in the ground?

I have some perennials and bulbs that I forgot to plant. I have tulip bulbs and of the plants... I have a Russian Sage, an Anise Hyssop, and a Foxglove. Until last weekend, I had left the plants in their original pots in our side yard and forgot about them. I brought them in our garage because I feared the cold temperatures were too much for them. All of them are still alive! So...now what??? Do I plant them...keep them inside...what????See More

The same thing happened to us! Amazing. My gardening book says to harvest when they are the size of marbles and to strip leaves above them as you pick, causing the plant to send out more branches and produce more stalks. It's my first time with…

Horse poop soil amendments...

Okay...please resolve an argument in our household... Is it okay or not to put horse poop in our vegetable garden and ground it up in the soil to improve the soil for gardening this year? (If it is harmful, please provide specifics or references.) My husband says his grandmother did it and there was no problems, but I thought you need time for it to break down in the soil. Thank you.See More

Amazed by Brussel Sprouts

Last year was my first for growing brussel sprouts. We weren't sure when they were ripe and never  picked any of the sprouts.  The plant grew taller and taller. At the end of the season, we did not remove the plant.. Now that it's March.......the plant is turning GREEN!!!!  I didn't think these were perennials and can't believe this plant is coming back. I'm not sure what variety of brussel sprout that it is.   Any advice????  Do I need to cut it back? (It's about 2 1/2 feet tall.)  Do you…See More

I have pea's and spinach planted but I will wait for the lettuce for a couple of weeks. It depends on the location of your garden how much cold it will stand. If you are at the bottom of a hill, the cool air pools more than hill top gardens.…

Well, according to the vegetable growing calendar, this is the time for lettuce and some other crops. I will be planting lettuce seeds directly into the ground as they dont appreciate being moved later on. This is my first year with a vegetable…

You might find them at a nursery like Family Tree or Soil Service. Otherwise you would have to go with seed and if you are in the KC area it's really kinda late to start seed. These are commercial types. They also possess resistance to a…

New tomato varieties.

I just heard about these new tomato varieties....Mountain Glory, Red Defender, Scarlet Red, and Security 28. They are supposed to taste great and be easy to grow. Has anyone had experience with these? Does anyone know where you can get them?

Everything we covered survived...even the flowering daffidils! The plants that weren't covered weren't in bloom, but looked like they did fine. I'm still not sure if my efforts were necessary or not.
