A.Valentine replied to Nicole Pitts's discussion 'Porcelain Vine'
Everything I have read is that this vine is highly invasive. It is a non native plant from asia and can quickly take over. However, I am thinking it is super invasive in warmer climates. Being in zone 5 it might not be as bad. You might want to dead…

A.Valentine replied to Cindy Vinchattle's discussion 'Growing Green Peppers'
Having planted them early they may have been stunted by the cold weather snaps that we had. However, I have noticed in the previous years when have planted them that they really didn't get big and produce until late July or August, then…

Keep an eye out for webworms or gypsy moths, I think both feed on the serviceberry. You might want to treat the tree with Bacillus thuringiensis.

About Me:
It will be 3 years next month since I have moved to KC. My garden continues to grow but I will definitely say my heart is in vegetable growing.
Perhaps it is the inner child in me, but I can't help it, I'm amazed by how a handful tiny seeds can provide so many glorious meals.

Keeping my head up....

Posted on May 13, 2010 at 11:29am 2 Comments

I have lived here in MO for 3 years now and last night as the rain was beating on the windows I started to miss the East Coast. Perhaps because it seemed like the weather on the Coast was so much more predictable. I didn't have a chance to start a big garden when I lived there, due to lack of time and moving around, but I don't remember fearing week to week what the weather would bring to my smallish garden.
Also, I am missing the ocean very badly. It didn't seem to bother me over the last…

Bloody Rabbits strike again.

Posted on February 9, 2010 at 11:22am 0 Comments

The rabbits are driving me crazy this winter. I know it is because of all the snow we have had and the lack of food but they have done quite a but of damage to my 5 foot tall burning bush. All the lower branches have chewed off. My knockout roses have been gnawed on too, but… Continue

Where are the bees?

Posted on June 21, 2009 at 7:25pm 1 Comment

Last year by this time we had a ton of bees buzzing around our garden. I have seen very few this year and it worries me. My cucumbers, squashes, etc. are not being pollinated and falling off. It looks like I will have to hand pollinate in the mornings :(
Anyone else having this problem?

An addiction or obsession?

Posted on June 12, 2009 at 4:28pm 1 Comment

I can't seem to go a week without planting something. I'm either given plants or I see a sale that I can't resist. Every time I get a new plant I say "no more this year", but I can't stop myself. Luckily when we bought our house it was a new construction with very little plants so that has allowed me to garden away, LOL.

Missin' my garden

Posted on May 18, 2009 at 8:19am 0 Comments

I have been in China for two weeks now and while I am having a blast, I miss my dogs and my garden. I keep wandering how all my veggie plants are doing. I have a plant sitter but I still worry about them, lol.
