Gentle Sam

My Sammy in the Texas Bluebonnets 10 years ago. He lived from July '95 to December of '07 and was very special. The day I got him and was walking out of the breeder's house with him, her husband said to me, "You'll never be sorry you got this dog." He was sure right.

Debbie: Thanks for writing. Sammy was a sheltie. Four months after he died, I got a sheltie puppy and named him Laddie. He joined Charlie, my almost-6-year-old sheltie -- he's also a tri-colored. They are like brothers and scuffle with each other constantly. Tell me about your shelties. They are such wonderful dogs. I also used to have schnauzers -- 3 in total, and I grew up with a collie named Robin. My schnauzers were Rags (salt 'n' pepper); Chopo (jet black), and Shonka (black 'n' silver) -- just thought I'd mention that for all the schnauzer folks reading this. They were miniatures, by the way. I switched to the sheltie breed just because I always wanted one, and the timing was right.

Marianna, Sammy was really beautiful, and I know you are still missing him!
I dread that day when it is time to say goodby to my doggies! Was Sammy a Sheltie or Collie? (I have 2 Shelties) Do you have any other dogs?

Linda, the bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas, where I was living when Sam and I used to hike along the nature trail close to our home. The bluebonnets are all over the Texas Hill Country in March and April, but my friends there tell me it's not a good crop this year because of drought. We have mountain lupines here in Colorado (among other states) that are related to the bluebonnet. Back in the 60's, Ladybird Johnson started that program of planting wildflowers all over the country. In Texas, they purposely seeded lots of fields and median strips along the interstates with not only bluebonnets, but many other types of wildflowers. I lived in Texas 7 years ('93 to '00) and miss this time of year down there because of the bluebonnets. Thanks for your good comments, especially about my Sammy.

Beautiful dog and flowers. I was just thinking the other day I have a tiny clump of scillia ( those are the same i think) and hoped they would naturalize for me did you do plant those or are they a natural occurance? What state are they in?
