Wave Petunias vs. Little Green Worms

Does anyone have recommendations on how to control little green worms that attack my Wave Petunias every year? We also have quite a few slugs with the moist ground this year. We have dogs, so does anyone have suggestions for a repellant that won't harm the pooches?
