This is my first time but I'm going organic in a greenhouse this year.
hi debra norton,i have a small greenhouse that i keep things in for the winter like apples sweetpotatos what ever, and flowers that my wife puts out in spring.some thing you may like to try - take plastic milk jugs cut ho 2" from batom cut top out leave handle fell with grass or leaves and dryer lint or 1 tb.alfalfa meal or whatever for nitrogen, add 3" soil to top of jug then add batoms of celery onions i like bacchori what ever you come up with, when spring come replant in garden they are good for soup or what ever,i do this; then let them go to seed do what you like, i save the seeds for replanting. bob
thank you for this info, Bob
I would like to get away from synthetic fertilizer in my flower gardens. Do you have any suggestions for organic fertilizers?
I'm going to use fish fertilizer and I've heard bone meal is good too and compost, but I haven't tried any of that yet.
Debra, if you have dogs, forget blood or bone meal. My dog Tally digs wherever I have either. However, the blood meal works great to keep rabbits & squirrels away! Thanks for everyone's input.
compost manure
ruth stout in her book gardening without work said all she did was add cottonseed meal, five pounds to 100 squar feet. for my self i like alfalfa meal.for lettus / cut add alfalfa meal water, get more lettus this way,get more and not bitter, the black seed simpson lettus.alfalfa has lots of nitrogen. the big 4 for all plants. [ phosphous ] = cottonseed meal for stem and root grouth. [nitrogen] = alfalfa meal for green growth. [potassium] = granit grit for flowers and fruit. [microorganism] = leaves or hay for opening the food door to all plant life. how to renew microorganisms to soil.1 or 2 cups of forest soil and 1 cup sugar or molasses is best to 5 gal.water keep air tiet for one week. i make it in 5 gal. buckit. to make more add sugar or molasses with 2 cups of old mix, and do as befor. add this microorganism mix when you make up your compost or to your potting soil. hope this helps you a little. bob
Chris, I was enlightened to the fact (this last summer by an organic farmer in Flint) that the white coffee filters were bleached so I had to start my compost pile over to stay organic. Now I only use the brown ones.
Does anyone know if it is hard to grow organic blueberries?
Yes. At least on the KS side the soil pH is completely wrong for them. Blueberries is a classic case of trying to work against nature. I'd suggest blackberries, which are wild around here, as a fruit that is well adapted to the area.
I try to stick to fish emulsion and or blood meal and manure for fertilizer but I usually wind up with some sort of bug spray in a section of the garden (but not the whole thing) I may have a year or two here and there where i didnt need anything sprayed but almost every year i wind up spraying something. Im anxious to here how others control things.
