First post here.
Just had a wayward spruce removed from the front of house. I was advised that the birch trees that we wish to plant in that area will not do well until we amend the soil to make it less acidic. How do I accomplish this task?

Hi Morris - Increasing the PH value of your soil, raising the alkiline content, is a relatively simple matter. However you may want to wait 3 months or so for the soil to fully adjust before planting. The time frame fits perfectly with a fall planting schedule which may be more successful than now.
You need to add a form of lime which is a calcium compound, usually including magnesium. Ground limestone is a terrific product that is easily obtained. For a quicker response you may want to use hydrated lime which has smaller particles.
Hope you enjoy your new trees.
