We have a lovely drawf crab apple tree in the back yard in a planting area with mulch extending beyond the drip line. The problem is the nasty sprouts that come up around the base of the tree through the mulch. We have to cut them back constantly! Is there any remedy for this?

A product called Sucker Stopper, you paint it on. Most Nursery and garden centers carry it. You could probably find it online, other wise you just have to keep pruning them off. Good luck.
There is a product called Sucker Stopper made by Monterey Chemicals that can be effective for basal sprouts. However, with a crabapple, new ones will shoot out. It is the neature of the tree to create a grove.
oops -- Linda and I had the same idea -- I did not see her reply. Sorry Linda.
Thanks bunches for the tip!
