Good morning-- my first post here. I need to plant something along the east side of my house, along the foundation. This is an area about 25 ft long, broken up by the air conditioner roughly about 8-10 ft from the south end. This end only gets a couple hours of sun in the morning, due to a neighbors tree. North of the air conditioner gets more sun, but only until noon when the shadow of the house appears.
The foundation wall here is about 5 ft high, as this side of the house has a small hill down to the neighbors. I have attached a Word document w/ a phot so you can see what Im describing.
I have no imagination when it comes to visualizing the garden. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Do you have a goal for the area? Would you like something that grows fast and will reach the bottom of the windows, or do you prefer smaller plantings that require little maintenance over the years? Evergreen? Flowering? Would you like something that produces berries for birds, or do you dislike messy droppings?
This area is between the AC unit and a chain link fence, on the east side of the house. It's little used as my gate to the back yard is on the opposite side. I basically need something to fit in the space, little maintenance. I also want something that everyone else plants (I'd plant a sequoia or giant redwood if I could). I saw an oakleaf hydrangea at Suburban over on Roe, planted outside their door. Loved it, the flowers were huge, and cone shaped clusters. I might go with that. Since I need to plant it away from the house to give it room to grow, I'm now trying to figure out what to do with the bare dirt between it and the foundation. Maybe nothing.
