How about a "Soil" category that includes topics on compost, manures, and other amendments?
kevin marsh, think thats a good idea. bob
Mine is frozen in process right now, but I got leaves in the fall and I put organic coffee filters(brown ones) and coffee grounds, organic egg shells, and organic carrot scrapings together for compost.
Debra, your compost sounds a lot like mine right now. I do add all from the kitchen scraps that do not contain animal fats, except for egg shells. I have many leaves and I try to turn and water it weekly if it is not frozen. I was able to improve my soil just because of the compost. I also added a lot of peat after spending time in the northwest, where the soil there is full of peat!
Is it bad to put the organic egg shells in?
It is my understanding that any types of egg shells are ok--just not the eggs inside.

Just keep in mind that commercial peat is depleting the reserves, as I understand it, so is not as environmentally sound choice as other forms of humus.

I keep adding kitchen scraps all winter and just find some leaves to cover them. They "pre-rot" through the freeze and thaw process and are ready to cook in the spring.

You should make a "Shelly's list" for selling, trading and give aways.
Thats a Shelly's List for GARDEN/GARDENING items to sell trade or give away!
