Can I use compost for a weed barier around my trees?

I planted hostas around all of our trees in our yard about 3 years ago.  Now the hostas are growing nicely and I would like to keep the weeds to a minimum.  So I was wondering if I could use my compost for a weed barrier to help keep the weeds out?
