I have a major yellow jacket nest in my front yard around the base of a maple tree.  It has opened up two large roots and measures about 12 inches by 8 inches in width and length.  I have no idea how deep it goes - but it is very active.  Because is it in an area near the house and around which I mow, I would like to get rid of them.  The only thing I have read is boiling water with dish detergent.  I don't like pesticides and vinegar won't help as I don't want to hurt the roots of the tree.  Any suggestions would be helpful.

drop the end of a water hose into the hole and turn it on.  Leave it on enough to keep the hole filled for a day or two (once you fill it up you can probably just turn it on a trickle).  They will leave...

If you dont want to use that much water, flood it several times a day for several days.

Troy: I like your tip - since I can flood it during the day as well as at night - we are on a well, so leaving the hose on for a day or two is really not an option - but flooding it a couple times a day will work.  I'll let you know how it works.  Diane
