Does anybody have a suggestion for a variety of blue spruce that won't grow as large as they usually do? I don't want to create too much shade as it grows, but I would love to have one to see outside my kitchen window!

A Dwarf Globe Spruce Picea Pungens 'Globosa' (3-5 ft) would be nice. We have several in our front yard.
I heartily agree with Kevin's idea of a globe blue spruce - they're beautiful and stay much smaller than a regular blue conical spruce. You usually find them when they are around about 18 inches in diameter but they are such slow growers that I doubt it would ever outgrow your space. There are a pair of truly enormous ones along the south side of 95th Street just east of Switzer - they must have been there for YEARS! Good luck!
Thanks Kristol! I will have to go look at 95th & Switzer & check those out!

Montgomery spruce get around 10 feet tall and similar width
There's a variety called 'Fat Albert' that is a semi-dwarf and there is also a variety called 'Hoopsii' that grows tall, but much more slender than the typical Colorado blue spruce.
Hoopsii is one of the best growing varieties in this area. Careful though -- Blue Spruces are a notoriously finicky plants in this area. Too dry of winters and too hot of summers.
