I have daffodils coming up all over the place. Some are as high as 6 inches, others have just broken ground. Should I do anything about them, like cutting the foliage back or mulching deeply over them? Or should I just leave them alone? And will t...

I love garden art and crafts. Have any of you been over to my friend Steve Hess's house. He has wonderful gardens, but oh the things to put in them are amazing. Visit this link. I know that they are hosting a holiday open house. He has a blog too!...

Welcome to the Savvygardener Community!

Hi, I'm Shelly Marsh, co-founder of Savvygardener.com - my newsletter for gardeners in the Kansas City area. After 10 successful years of publishing Savvygardener.com my husband Kevin and I decided to launch a special place on the web where our readers can share with each other all aspects of their gardening experiences. This is the Savvygardener Community. I hope you will join and become an active and enthusiastic member.

Time to cover up

Winter like weather has arrived. Pull out your gardening sheets and blankets because if there are any annuals you are trying to keep around they will need to be covered this weekend. The low temperatures are suppose to dive into the 30's for the next couple of mornings and it looks as if they may be forecasting a chance of snow flurries on Saturday. Yikes! I don't even like to talk about snow this early. It makes for a very long winter.

Cicada eating Beagle

Are the cicada's in your neighborhood getting any quieter? They are in ours do to the appetite of our Beagle, Sam Parker. He is crazy about eating cicadas. I know it sounds crazy but he will come into my office and give me that look, "Hey, I know you are busy and it is really not time for my walk but do you think we could go outside and look for some cicadas?" Seriously we may have to take Sam to cicadas anonymous....Pretty funny! He is especially fond of the ones right out of their shell. Eww..… Continue

Wet Soggy Week

I think I have started to grow webbed feet! Boy is it wet. The grass is growing like crazy and I haven't had time to cut it. It looks like this weekend will be the time to be outside. Nice mild temperatures and no rain. I can hardly wait!

Naked ladies

Naked ladies are in full bloom all over Kansas City. I am not a huge fan. No offense, just not one of my favorite flowers. They seem a bit naked to me.....Ha! That bare stem just doesn't cut it. Anyway, they are every where so if you have never seen one they are pink and about 2 feet tall with a naked stem. You can't miss them!

Bees are a buzzin

While I was working outside this morning I was amazed at the number of bumble bees buzzing around my begonias. There were so many in fact that I stopped working just to watch them gather nectar for a bit. So fascinating! I was stung a couple of weeks ago but only because I swatted a poor bee against my neck. I could feel something buzzing around and sure enough the bee got a bit too close and whamo! I had to have Kevin pull the stinger out of my neck. I put some ice on my neck and felt better in… Continue
